Twelve suspects, including 11 stowaways and an impersonator were today arrested and handed over to the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and the police respectively, by the Nigerian Navy of the Western Naval Command for further investigation and possible prosecution.
11 stowaways were arrested for hiding out in a Europe-bound vessel, while the impersonator was arrested for disguising as a seaman writer.
The stowaways were identified as Akinwunmi Jeflando, Pope Olu, Jacob James, Samuel Jodge, Ade Samadin, Dan Gogo, James Akinbami, Paul Oguns, Joseph Emmanuel, Stephen Cooper and Jalo Cooper.
The Commanding Officer NNS BEECROFT, Commordore Abraham Adaji, while parading the suspects at Apapa, Lagos disclosed that: “Preliminary investigations revealed that the arrested persons boarded the vessel through the rudder trunk access manhole in a bid to travel with the vessel to Europe.
“The suspects were arrested at about 12: 30 am on March 11, for illegally boarding of Merchant Vessel CITRON berthed at Capital Oil Jettt, Apapa, Lagos. They were detected and subsequently arrested by own patrol boat,''
Afterwards, Adaji while stressing the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ikot Ette-Ibas zero tolerance for all maritime crimes within Nigeria’s space, handed over the suspects to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation and prosecution.
He also called on the criminally minded elements to seek legitimate employment in stead of engaging themselves in illegal activities.
