DSS Dismisses Rumour of Ekiti Assembly Member’s Death
The Department of State Services (DSS) today dispersed
the rumoured death of Hon. Akanni Afolabi, a member of the Ekiti State House of
Assembly who was arrested by the service.
Afolabi was rumored to have slumped and died in the
DSS detention in the early hour of today.
While presenting Afolabi before journalists, Mr.
Abdullahi Garba said the member was duly invited by the service over some breaches
bordering on state security.
According to him, "You can see that Akanni
Afolabi is hale and hearty.”
He said the breaches fall under the purview of the
services to investigate.
Garba said the briefing became necessary in order
to debunk the rumour being peddled in the state by some mischief makers.
"Nigerians and the Ekiti people in particular
are convinced to see that Afolabi is hale and hearty as being presented to the
press today," he said.
Garba who said investigation was still ongoing on
the matter said that the service has not receive any court order for his
release.
He warned that the service would not hesitate to
bring the full weight of the law against any one or persons that may engage in
violent actions.
"The DSS will therefore warn all those who
have planned to make a meat out of this to desist from it and stir clear from
trouble,"he said.
Garba assured all abiding Ekiti residents of
adequate security and asked them to go about their normal businesses.
The lawmaker who represents Efon Alaaye constituency,
said he has been very sick and that all pleas to take him to the hospital fell on the deaf ears of the DSS operatives.
