Fresh Lassa Fever Outbreak in Bauchi: 3 Dead, 10 others Infected
No fewer than three persons have died from a fresh outbreak of Lassa fever while ten others are currently infected with the virus in Bauchi State.
The Executive Chairman Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Ibrahim Gamawa, who disclosed this yesterday at a press briefing in Bauchi said the ten recorded new cases of the fever was recorded in one family at Jaye village in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of the state.
According to him, the outbreak of the disease started after a 78 year old man died of suspected Lassa fever disease without seeking any medical treatment from a health centre.
"Investigations revealed that the deceased contracted the virus from Liman Katagum where some cases of Lassa fever were found in November last year.
"The victim was put on traditional treatment from patent medicine stores for a number of days before he died.10 persons contacted the virus and samples of their blood were taken to Eruwa laboratory in Edo state, where they were confirmed positive"
" 10 of the victims are currently on admission at the state isolation centre at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching hospital, Bauchi. The state rapid response team was sent to the village to carry out health education sensitisation as well as followup exercise for 21 days"
