Police in Anambra State have arrested a notorious armed
robbery kingpin, Ikechukwu Udensi also known as Ikanda who was declared wanted
last year for killing a trader in Onitsha, Ndubuisi Nwokolo.
Udensi, who is notorious around Onitsha axis, and
also has several boys working for him, had last year allegedly murdered the 38
years old business man in broad daylight for attempting to save a commercial
motorcyclist conveying him from being extorted by Udensi and his boys.
N1million bounty was place on him by the Anambra
State Government for anyone who can provide information that can lead to his
arrest as he was said to be powerful and also works for several top politicians
in the state who always effected his release, each time he was arrested.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Dandaura,
who paraded Udensi before journalists, said he was arrested last Sunday in
Onitsha, following a tip off when he sneaked into the town to collect proceeds
of illegal toll from his men.
Dandaura said: “We had launched an aggressive
manhunt for him after the killing in June 2018, and on March 31, 2019,
following painstaking intelligence and strategic planning, police operatives
attached to command operation Udoka and special Anti-Robbery Squad(SARS) raided
criminal hideout at Menax near flyover in Onitsha and arrested the notorious
suspect.”
The commissioner also paraded five men-Abuchi
Nwogwu, Okwudili Nwanne, Mmaduabuchi Obia, Chiedozie Orah and Ekechi Chukwuemeka-who
were said to have set blaze a police station in Ajalli, Orumba South LGA
shortly before the general election and carted away three AK 47 riffles.
Dandaura said the men who are suspected to be
members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) had during the incident also
wounded a police DCO.
“Upon interrogation, the suspects took police
operatives to their criminal hideout and one AK47 riffle with breech number
KO3588792 which was carted at the police station was recovered.
“Also, one Chimaobi Amauwa, 25, suspected to be a
member of a robbery gang which operates around Onitsha axis was also paraded.
“The suspects owned up to the crime, except Udensi,
who insisted that the killing of the business man was done by his boys and not
him,” he said.
Dandaura said investigations were ongoing in all
the cases, and that the suspects would be charged to court for prosecution
afterwards.
