A school teacher in Ondo State, who sent an SS3 student to help her get a mango from it tree, which led to his death, has been arrested by the police in the state.

Temidayo Oluwole of Ijo Mimo High School in Akure, the state capital, last weekend died when he fell from a mango tree in the school compound.

Oluwole, who was said to be preparing for his Senior Secondary School Certificate examination, was in school for extra mural class.

A teacher of the school, simply identified as Mrs. Kura and who teaches Physics, was alleged to have sent the deceased to help her get a mango from the tree after a tutorial class last Saturday.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Femi Joseph, who said the suspect was in their custody, said the woman was being interrogated.

Joseph, who stated that the matter had been transferred to the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) of the command, said the teacher may face prosecution for her negligence of duty.

"She has shown up at the station late last night and the Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the state CID.

"She (Kura) was supposed to be the parent of the students in the school and wouldn’t have sent the boy on such a risky errand.

"This is the reason she is more culpable. Her negligence caused what happened to the boy and that is dereliction of duty. We will do justice to the best of our ability," he said.

The deceased's father, Pastor Bode Adegoke, said he had left everything on the matter to God, adding that the state Ministry of Education had taken over the burial of the deceased.

Sequel to the death of the student, all trees in the school premises had been felled, including the mango tree from which the boy fell off.
