Leaders from the five local government areas of Edo
Central, Edo State, are demanding to produce the next governor of the state on the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform.
The leaders, at a meeting hosted by Elder Odion
Ugbesia, a former senator, who represented the senatorial district in the National
Assembly in 2007, according to sources, took place last Sunday, where they
unanimously agreed that the district should get the governorship position of the
state in 2020 or nothing.
Those present at the meeting included a former
Minister of Works, Chief Mike Onolememen; former Speaker of the state House of
Assembly, Friday Itulah; Dr. Anthony Aziegbemhin, Frank Erewele, John Yakubu,
Kenneth Imasuangbon and Philip Olumese.
A chieftain of the PDP in the state and frontrunner
for the governorship position, Imasuangbon, expressed satisfaction over the
manner leaders who attended the meeting discussed with the interest of Esan land
at heart.
According to him, “Esan land cannot continue to be
marginalised and we say we are from the same state. I'm happy everyone is now
pursuing the same agenda of having Esan man or woman as the governor in 2020;
this has been my agitation, so it’s a good way to begin and we can take it up
from there.
“We are the only senatorial zone that has not
produced the governor. The Bini and the Afemai are good people and they are in
support of our demands.”
Also, Itulah said the zone had been marginalised
for too long, noting that it was time the region made its demand known.
The former Speaker said: “Since 1991 when the state
was created, Esan has had just a year and half as a governor. We have supported
others to become governors in the past, and the time for them to also support
us has come.”
Also, it was learnt that the PDP in the state met at
its secretariat last Monday with the state executive, and decided to throw the
contest open.
In his remark, Onolememen described the meeting as a
huge success and praised leaders who attended for speaking with one voice.
