Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara, has
approved the sale of houses in five estates built by the state government to
2,787 initial allottees.
The houses were allotted on a rental basis by
previous administrations to individuals in the state, but with the current
approval by the governor, they became substantive owners.
The governor made this disclosure while
inaugurating a committee saddled with the responsibility of building a new
estate of 500 houses in the state capital, Maiduguri.
Umara, who said the project should commence
immediately, instructed that the 500 new houses are to be completed next year.
The committee, which is to be chaired by the state Deputy
Governor, Usman Kadafur, has members which include professional engineers.
The governor, during the inauguration ceremony,
said he had approved the recommendation of a different committee to begin the
sale of 2,787 houses within the estates in the state on an owner-occupier basis.
He said by this, those living in the houses would
be made to pay a sum after which they will fully own the houses.
Umara revealed that his administration has entered a
legal agreement with Family Homes Nigeria Limited, a private housing developer,
for the construction of 1,700 urban housing and 3,200 rural housing in the
state.
He explained that that would be executed through a
public-private partnership (PPP).
