The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) Makurdi zonal office has arraigned one Adetunji Oluwatoba Obasanmi, an officer of the Federal Road Safety Commission(FRSC), on a three-count charge for false pretence and cybercrimes.

Obasanmi was arraigned before Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon sitting at the Federal High Court Makurdi, Benue State, on Wednesday.

One of the counts read that  "Adetunji Oluwatoba Obasanmi sometimes in June 2019, in Makurdi, Benue State within the jurisdiction of this honourable Court did intentionally use the name of one Kelly Brautigam, on an email without authority, which document you knew contained false pretence and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 25 of the cybercrimes (prohibition, prevention etc) Act, 2015 and punishable under the same section of the Act."

The defendant, however, pleaded ‘not guilty’ when the charges were read to him.

Prosecution counsel, Y. Y. Tarfa, asked for a trial date, he made it clear that Court has already granted bail to defendant on a civil matter while the criminal investigation was still before the Court.
However, the counsel to the defendant, David Ojile not opposing the application for trial date, made an oral application for bail of his client

Justice Olajuwon admitted him to bail on formal terms and the case was adjourned to January 7, 2020, for trial.
Trouble started for Adetunji when he was arrested by the EFCC in relation to a case of cybercrime.

An intelligence report had disclosed that some persons were into internet fraud where scam emails were sent to several unsuspecting victims through their email accounts and thereafter are defrauded of their hard-earned money running into millions of naira.

Investigation reports  alleged that the suspect through various social media platforms defrauded several victims of their money.
