Edo State Police Command on Tuesday paraded five persons for impersonating Nigerian army officers by using their uniforms to terrorise the citizens of the state.

It said three of the five persons, Ehiorobo Evans, Osariemen Agho and Solomon Hussaini, deserted the army while two others,  Idoro Solomon and Ezenyi Kelechi, said to be friends to the army deserters, were arrested for impersonating Nigerian soldiers.

The police further revealed that the operatives of the police force also foiled a robbery incident that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday along the Benin-Lagos expressway.

He added that one of the armed robbers was killed, one was arrested with gun wounds while another escaped with bullet wounds.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chidi Nwabuzor, in a statement issued on Tuesday in Benin-city, said the suspects assembled in an area and were putting on army camouflage uniforms.

He said the suspects were using their uniforms to terrorise the innocent citizens of the state.

Nwabuzor stated that men of the police force, who acted on a tip-off, stormed the scene and nabbed the suspects.

"The operatives of Anti-Cult Unit, acting on a tip-off on PZ road, off Sapele road in the ancient city, observed that five young men namely: Idoro Solomon, Ehiorobo Evans, Osariemen Agho, Solomon Hussaini and Ezeyi Kelechi were seen gathering in the area, dressed in army camouflage uniforms, mobilised to the scene and arrested five of the suspects who confessed being fake army officers.

"They also confessed to have been terrorising the area. Items recovered from them included army camouflage uniforms and Jack knives," Nwabuzor said in the statement.

However, one of the accused, Evans Ehiorobo, said he served four months in the Nigerian army but has been on AWOL for eight months.

According to him, "I am a soldier from 2 Division, Ordinance Unit of the Nigerian Army. Yesterday, I came to visit my friend whom I knew him from Zaria. So there was one of my course mates upstairs playing game; I just joined him before the police came to arrest us.

"I was on mufti during the arrest; it was through my phone that they found my picture that I was a soldier, and that was how I was arrested.

“I am still serving as a soldier but I have been on AWOL for eight months now and I didn't return.

"They have not been paying for a while. I served four months in the army. I have been arrested twice-thee first one was for robbery.
