The Lagos State House of Assembly has urged the state
Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to ensure proper sensitisation of residents of
the state about the raging Coronavirus disease.
This is coming as the immediate-past Chairman of
the Senate Committee on Health, Senator Lanre Tejuoso, posited that Nigeria would
overcome Coronavirus outbreak, as the country is good at managing emergencies.
The issue was raised under Matter of Urgent Public
Importance by Hon. Akeem Shokunle (Oshodi/Isolo 1) during the Assembly plenary yesterday
and seconded by Hon. Lukman Olumo (Ajeromi/Ifelodun 1).
Shokunle, who chairs the Assembly Committee on
Health, stated that it was important that the state governor sensitise the people
of the state on the matter and implement the law passed by the eighth Assembly
on Cancer And Diseases Control Institute.
Sanwo-Olu was also urged to direct the state
Commissioner for Education to ensure proper awareness on Coronavirus in all
public and private schools across the state.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa,
however, thanked members of the Assembly for their contributions to the matter since
the dreaded virus was discovered in the state, stating that the issue of
placing a ban on airlines from the countries affected by Coronavirus had to be
re-considered due to the economic consequences.
According to him, "The federal government and
Lagos State Government are working together to curb the spread of Coronavirus
in the country.
"We should commend our state governor for his
efforts on the matter since the outbreak in the state.”
Obasa, however, urged the governor to implement the
provision of the law on the Centre for Cancer and Diseases Control, which was
passed by the eighth Assembly.
"The people who had contact with the Italian
man suspected to have been infected with Coronavirus are being watched. We should stand by at all times to reduce or
prevent the invasion of such a disease of our state," he said.
The Speaker stressed that the state government
needed to reach out to many organisations, including the local government
authorities, CDAs, CDCs, NURTW and others and educate them so that they could
pass the right information to the people, as there are a lot of fake news
across the state since the outbreak of the disease.
He said: "We should wear mask and wash our
hands. We can also use handkerchiefs when we go to gatherings to cover our
faces.
"The Commissioner for Education should ensure
adequate campaigns in our public and private schools.”
Contributing, the Majority Leader of the Assembly,
Hon. Sanai Agunbiade (Ikorodu 1), stated that residents of the state should be
urged to comply with all the preventive measures to avoid contacting the Coronavirus.
Meanwhile, Tejuoso has posited that Nigeria would overcome
the Coronavirus outbreak, as the country is good at managing emergencies.
Speaking with journalists on Monday, he said the
present National Assembly was doing the necessary criticisms and commendations
needed to spur the authorities into doing the right thing.
He said: "So far, the situation is being
managed well. The ball should not be dropped again after we overcome
Coronavirus like we did after the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in 2014.
"Sanitisers in all public space along with
advocacy should be constantly used, and shouldn't be used only during
emergencies.
"Developed countries like China and Italy that
have 100 per cent functional primary health centres are still having challenges
setting up prevention systems. How many primary health centres are functional
in Nigeria? This is a very big question.
"We must firstly have a convenient nearby clinic
that Nigerians anywhere in the country can go for complaints in case of any
symptoms."
