Adamawa Policeman Lynched To Death for Killing Passenger at Checkpoint

The Adamawa State Police Command on Thursday confirmed the lynching to death of a policeman after he allegedly killed one person and injured other passengers at a police check-police in Wure-Dole village of Gierei Local Government Area in the state.

The Police Spokesperson, Othman Abubakar, who confirmed the incident, said two policemen mounted a check point and stopped a vehicle. After the vehicle stopped, an argument ensued between the policeman who then allegedly killed a passenger and injured others.

He said as a result of the development, a mob lynched the policeman who committed the act and caused tensions in the area but as at time of filing this report, the situation was under control.

Abubakar appealed to the public to be calmed, adding that the police were on top of the situation.

He said a team of policemen had evacuated the corpse of the policeman from the scene while normalcy has returned to the village.

‎However an eyewitnesses revealed that the policeman, a police inspector opened fire on the vehicle he stopped at Wuro-Dole village following an argument with some passengers.

He said the sound of the gun shot caused a serious tensions and confusion  in the area, adding that some residents were thinking it was Boko Haram terrorists, therefore fled until they were told what happened.

The eyewitness cautioned the police to urge their men on duty to stop molesting passengers on the road, adding that instead of protecting lives and property which is their obligatory functions, they are taking lives.

"‎The police inspector had misunderstanding with the passengers so he fired at them. He instantly killed one person and injured two others and when the passengers charged at him, he threw away his rifle and ran before they caught up with him and killed him with stones," a commercial driver alleged.
