An air of uncertainty still surrounded last night the fate of abducted wife of Comrade Mike Okemi, a former state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and aide of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State.

Amid rumours that the kidnappers of Mrs Stella Okemi have demanded a huge sum running into tens of millions of naira as ransom for the victim, the Delta State Police Command was silent on Thursday on the situation of things surrounding the ugly incident, which occurred in the state capital two days ago.

The state police command spokesman, Mr Andrew Aniamaka, would not respond to request for update on the situation including a text message from the media last night.

However, it was learnt that the victim's husband, family members and close associates have since embarked on a programme of prayers to seek divine intervention for the release Mrs Okemi unharmed.

Comrade is regarded as a devout Christians, and he was reported as saying he was confident that God will ensure that no harm befall his wife till she regains her freedom from her captors.

It was learnt that the victim had, on Tuesday evening gone on regular school run to bring her children back from school in Asaba, unknown to her that gunmen were lurking around, waiting to swoop on her.

The criminals reportedly approached her in waiting car and led her into their runaway vehicle at gunpoint, fleeing with their target with nobody to stop them.

Despite the apparent decline in the level of crime across the state, kidnapping appears to be on the rise especially in and around the state capital and other urban centres across the state as kidnapping, armed robbery and cultism are the most regular features of periodic state pollice crime reports.
