Hundreds of butchers in Bodija International market in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, on Tuesday trooped out in protest against the state government relocation order and last weekend demolition of structures in their abattoir.

Their protest disrupted activities at the state secretariat and vehicular movement for hours as the state Police command issued stern warning to the butchers over possible breakdown of law and order.

The state police spokesman, SP Kunle Ajisebutu, acknowledged that while it recognized the group’s fundamental right to protest, such protest should be carried out within the ambit of the law.
He added that "The Police will not watch individuals, groups, or associations disrupt the peace currently being enjoyed in the state. Therefore, it will not hesitate to deal ruthlessly with anyone or association whose activities in whatever guise are capable of causing breakdown of law and order in any part of the state."

The protesters in their numbers carried placards with various inscriptions such as 'Eyin ara ilu e gba wa o' ' APC, butchers vote you to power, don't let us vote your party out' and 'APC ni apapo e gba wa o'
One of the protesters, who spoke on behalf of others, Mr Tunji Jigan, lamented that the abattoir was destroyed at the weekend and they have come to let the government know about the incident.

Speaking on the directive by the state government that all butchers to relocate to the new central abattoir at Amosun village, Mr Jigan noted that the case was already in court and government should allow the court give verdict before asking them to relocate.

Addressing the protesters, Deputy Governor, Chief Moses Adeyemo assured them that the case would be presented to the Governor and subsequent meeting with the butcher's representatives would be initiated for amicable resolution.
Meanwhile, the state government had urged the butchers to exercise patience while the case was being looked into.
