We are Yet to Receive
Warrant for Arrest of Lamorde from Senate, Say Nigeria Police
The police high command has revealed that it has not
yet received official letter from the Senate to arrest the
embattled former Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),
Ibrahim Lamorde, over his alleged involvement in the N2trillion diversion
of recovery funds.
The upper chamber had earlier mandated its Committee
on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to issue a warrant of arrest on
Lamorde when he failed to honour invitations extended to him by its
investigative panel to appear before it and clear himself of allegations of
corruption preferred against him.
The Chief Executive Officer of Panic Alert
Security Systems, Dr. George Uboh, had petitioned the Senate, accusing the
former EFCC boss of diverting over N2 trillion recovered from politicians and
other eminent Nigerians who looted the nation’s treasury.
The committee, chaired by Senator Samuel
Anyanwu (PDP, Imo East), had recommended that to save the integrity of the
Senate and preserve its powers to summon, Lamorde should be compelled to honour
its summon through arrest.
Lamorde, through his counsel, Festus Keyamo,
had justified why he didn’t honour Senate’s invitation.
The former EFCC boss stated that he has a
pending case in court against the decisions of the Senate.
Lamorde, who now wears the rank of a
Commissioner of Police, is among the 67 people currently undergoing Senior
Executive Course No 38 at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic
Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State.
The police high command said up till
yesterday, there had not been a letter from the Senate, demanding that Lamorde
should be arrested by the police.
Speaking on the case, the Force
Spokesperson, Olabisi Kolawole, Assistant Commissioner of Police, said up till
yesterday evening, the police was yet to receive such order from the Senate
Although she did not say if the police were
arrest a top ranking officer like Lamorde, she insisted that the police was yet
to receive warrant of arrest from the legislature.
