Delta-Born Dr Okobah Bags Highest Medical Award in US

Delta State-born Nigerian and United States of America-based physician, Mrs. Isioma
Okobah, has bagged the 2017 edition of the prestigious fellow of the American Academy of Family Physician Award.



The award is the highest honour bestowed on practicing physician in the US who have distinguished themselves among colleagues and in their community by their contributions towards the development of family medicine.

The award is also conferred on physicians who excelled in the advancement of health care to the American people and by their professional development through medical education and research.



The award was conferred on the recipient on September 16, 2017, at the convocation ceremony of the Academy which held at Grand Hyatt, River Walk, San Antonio Texas, US.



The convocation was attended by veteran physicians and stakeholders in the medical field from 50 countries. The awardees, Dr. Isioma Okobah, is an Associate Professor of the School of Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine and Moore House School of Medicine, Atlanta Georgia in the US.

In the last 12 years or more, Dr. Okobah has distinguished and carved an enviable niche for herself by periodically carrying out free medical programme for the rural populace of Delta State.


In specific terms, Okobah, through her foundation, Isioma Okobah Foundation, has advocated and sensitised the rural populace of Delta State, her home state in Nigeria, on healthy living and environmental cleanliness.

 Okobah’s free medical programme has become a household name especially in Delta North senatorial district, where the sick in the various communities are treated freely and also presented with free medication.

Her humanitarian gesture in this area has earned her wide acclaim, not only in Nigeria but globally.

Among communities that have benefited from Okopbah’s free medical services are Igbodo where she single handedly built a community hospital; Ute-ogbeje, Owere-Olubor, Akunezi, Umunede, Ewuru, Alisimie, Abavo, Asaba, Ibusa, Orhoakpor, Owa Alero, Ezi with her humanitarian work cutting across the length and breadth of the state.

Medical institutions, including government hospitals, private clinics and public health centres in the state has benefited from Okobah’s philanthropic gesture of free medical equipment.
