...Army saves suspects from mob action

The Badagry division of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Lagos State on Sunday rescued a pregnant woman who was kidnapped by two men, but she died hours later after she went into emergency labour.

The officials, who were said to be on routine patrol at Aradagun Bus Stop, had intercepted a vehicle with registration number KTU356CE coming to Lagos from Cotonou, Benin Republic, with three occupants ; two men and the pregnant woman.

It was gathered that the woman, who had luggage suspected to be rice, had boarded the saloon car thinking it was a taxi, but when she realised otherwise, she raised an alarm.

Her cries for help attracted other motorists and the FRSC officials  and they gave chase until they caught up with them near an AP gas station.

The FRSC team led by one P. Danboyi interrogated the occupants of the car and it was ascertained that the pregnant woman was in trouble as she had injuries on her body.

Afterwards, she was rushed to Ola-Oki Hospital at Ibereko, where she was delivered of a baby boy through Cesarean operation, having gone into emergency labour.

Hours after the operation, she died around 3p.m. and her body has since been moved to Badagry General Hospital mortuary pending when the family will claim it.

Meanwhile, at the scene where the FRSC officials caught up with the kidnappers, an angry mob descended on the suspects, beat them up and would have set them ablaze but soldiers from the Ibereko Barracks were alerted.

The soldiers put a stop to the mob action,  dispersed the crowd and handed over the suspects to the Badagry Police Division.

The FRSC Unit Commander in Badagry, Fatai Bakare, who confirmed the incident, said the the woman was delivered of a boy, adding that the child was safe.

Also, the state Police Spokesman, SP Chike Oti, who confirmed the incident however said it was not a case of kidnapping but that of 'one-chance' robbers.

He said: "It's not a case of kidnapping but that of 'one-chance'. She had some goods, boarded a vehicle to convey her to her location but along the line, they wanted to rob her.

"She raised alarm and the robbers afraid that they might run into trouble with security operatives, pushed her off the vehicle.

"Unknown to them, people heard the woman's screams and saw when she fell from the vehicle. They pursued the vehicle, caught up with the robbers and attacked them.

"The woman was picked up and rushed to hospital by FRSC officials and she was delivered of her baby through surgery.

"Soldiers intervened and stopped the mob from killing the suspects. The soldiers contacted the police and handed over the suspects to the police. They are currently at an undisclosed hospital."
