Borno Commences
Relocation of Refugees from Schools to Resettlement Camps
Borno State Government today commenced the relocation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from schools which have been serving as IDPs camps.
The action commenced with the relocation of the first batch of 602 IDPs at Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS), Yerwa to Dalori resettlement camp to allowed for the re-opening of closed public schools in the state.
Schools in the state have remained closed for about two years as a result of Boko Haram insurgency.
Speaking to journalists, the state Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Musa Inuwa Kubo, said the relocation had been postponed four times.
Kubo, who spoke to journalists at the premises of GGSS, Yerwa, said the relocation of the first phase of IDPs could have started last year, but logistic and security reasons halted the exercise.
According to him, “We thanked God that it is a reality, and we are conveying 602 IDPs to Dalori camp with their families this (Monday) morning. We have assured the people that this exercise is also to take care of the basic needs of the displaced persons.
“We promised them earlier that wherever we are taking them to from the schools, we will certainly not be less than the conditions that they are leaving behind in this school-turned resettlement camp.
“We assured the people
that where we are taking these displaced persons have water and toilets. All the basic facilities of shelter and security are put in place.”
He revealed that the lack of these basic facilities and the security of the IDPs had delayed their relocations to camps from these schools.
