Tension as Security Agents Take over Kogi Assembly
Following the emergence of two Speakers, Rt. Hon.
Momohjimoh Lawal and Hon. Imam Umar, representing Lokoja 1 in Kogi State in the state assembly, fully
armed security agents have taken over the state assembly complex.
Last Tuesday, the Speaker Lawal was allegedly
impeached by five members of the assembly.
The embattled speaker on that day, assured journalists
that the assembly would reconvene today.
At the assembly complex today,
fully armed Mobile Police men, personnel of the Department of State Security
Service (DSS) and Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corp (NSCDC) were at alert
preventing workers from entering the premises as they turned them back.
One of the police senior officer (name withheld)
who spoke some journalists, said the taking over of the state assembly
complex was a directive from the above.
Meanwhile, Lawal with his 15 members last Tuesday
left for Abuja seeking solution to the crisis that has engulf the assembly.
It was gathered that while in Abuja, the speaker
met with national officers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where he
informed them of the happenings in the state.
The leader of the five faction members of the assembly
who impeached the speaker, Hon. Friday Sani, a member of the PDP who is the
Chief Whip of the assembly, last Tuesday, while addressing journalists on the
purported impeachment of Lawal, alleged that
the impeached speaker has not demonstrated the capacity to lead the assembly.
