Absence of Sniffer Dogs, Minimal Military Presence at Airports Bother Air Travel


Air travellers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) on Saturday decried the absence of sniffer dogs and the lack of adequate military and police personnel to assist the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), secure the airports across the country.

FAAN’s security outfit, in collaboration with the army, had foiled two attempts of suspected Boko Haram members to unleash havoc at the airport at the tail end of 2015 while claiming they were on surveillance mission at the airport.

The Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, at the height of the recent airport bombing across Europe, had assured that government was deploying sniffer dogs across the airports to complement the efforts of FAAN security outfit.

The passengers who spoke under anonymity complained that placing the pictures of wanted Boko Haram members at the airport by the military is not enough measure to check the insurgents.

They decried the inadequate presence of police and military personnel to assist the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) security outfit.

According to them, FAAN staff are obviously too overwhelmed by the large number of travellers during the period. One of them said: “Look around you, can you see any sniffer dog or a CCTV camera?”

The ministry, THISDAY however gathered, had deployed long distance CCTV cameras around the airport.

The Acting Chief Security (CSO), of Aviation Security (AVESEC) Mr. Abdulraham Kayode Mamman, hinted that efforts had been made to intensify security at the airport following the ministry’s directive that security must be beefed up there.

Population of Doctors in Nigeria Hits 74,543

  The number of registered medical doctors in Nigeria has risen to 74,543. According to the federal government statistics, as at 2018, the stock of professionally regulated health workers in Nigeria health sector has also recorded a significant increase. The population equates to 36.3 percent of medical doctors per 100,000 population (doctor to population ratio of 1: 2753). Fifty-nine percent of the registered medical practitioners were in good standing with 35 percent being females. UBEC Board Chairman, Daughter Freed from Captivity

The Board Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Muhammed Mahmoud, and his daughter were on Tuesday released by their abductors. Mahmoud, his daughter and several other travellers were abducted last Monday on the Kaduna-Abuja expressway when suspected bandits open fire at them. The UBEC boss’ driver was said to have been killed during the incident. There has been no information about other commuters who were abducted by the bandits.
