Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has thrown the gates of the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium open for Saturday’s U20 World Cup qualifiers between the Falconets and Tanzania.
The governor said the directive was to enable the public to come and cheer the Nigeria Falconets to victory against Tanzania in FIFA world cup qualifiers for France 2018.
Meanwhile, arrangements have been concluded by the government for a hitch-free match today.
According to NAN reports, while the synthetic pitch has been worked on to allow for a free-flowing football, the broken perimeter fence has also been reconstructed to check unlikely incident of fans invading the field of play.
The state Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, on Tuesday undertook a tour of the stadium where he expressed satisfaction with the facilities. Shaibu, who trained with the Nigeria team on during their training session on Thursday evening to encourage them, said the state was not only hosting to win, but to ensure comfort of the visitors.
At the interval, the Falconets opponent for the match, Tanzania, failed to make it to Benin on Thursday as planned owing to flight delay fron Addis Ababa. The team is now expected to arrive Nigeria on Friday and proceed straight to Benin for the first round qualifier.
Newsmen report that the second leg will take place in Dar es Salaam on Sept. 30, with the winner, on aggregate, to tackle the winner of the Morocco/Senegal clash in the second round in November. Also, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Vincentia Enyonam Amedome from Togo as referee for the match.
She will be assisted by compatriots Kossiwa Kpadenou (Assistant 1), Abra Sitsope Agbedanou (Assistant 2) and Aissata Ameyo Amegee (Fourth Official) while the match commissioner is Rochell Woodson from Liberia.
The 9th FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup will be staged in four cities in France from August 7 to 26, 2018.
