Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has distanced himself from a group known as 'Osinbajo Volunteers' whose mission, according to it, is for Osinbajo to succeed President Muhhamadu Buhari in 2019.
The group, whose sponsors, till now, remained unknown, had also launched its website with activities of Osinbajo during his stint as Acting President, asserting that it wants Osinbajo to stand as presidential candidate in the 2019 election.
While calling on members of the public to volunteer for Osinbajo, the group however made it clear on its website that they are not acting at the behest of the current vice president.
“Note that Osinbajo did not endorse this volunteer group. We have never met him. We are strong believers in the fact that he is the right ruler for Nigeria and must create a peoples volunteer base for him,” the volunteer group said.
However, Laolu Akande, Spokesman to the Vice President, in a brief statement declared that the group was out for mischief.
“Please disregard this website created by faceless people for mischievous purposes,” he tweeted via his verified Twitter handle @akandeoj.
“It has absolutely nothing to do with the Vice President.”
It would be recalled that the race for the 2019 presidential election kicked off un-officially with the open endorsement of a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, by the Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan.
