Ahead of the National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a group of stakeholders of the party in the Southeast on Sunday declared their support for a former Secretary to Enugu State Government, Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, to emerge as the party National Vice chairman for the zone.
The group, operating under the umbrella of South East Progressive Alliance (SEPA) also hailed the courage of the party 's National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun, in backing out of the chairmanship race, insisting that the bold step showed he had the interest of the party at heart.
In a statement made available to journalists in Enugu and signed by Hon. Kennedy Ufere and Dr Onyeka Agbo as Coordinator and Secretary respectively, SEPA insisted that it had become imperative for the party to have a new set of leaders to pilot it's affairs ahead of the 2019 elections.
They noted that with the endorsement of the former governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole by relevant stakeholders as Oyegun's successor, it was also important that credible members of the party were supported to emerge as members of the incoming National Working Committee.
"Nnamani has carved a niche for himself. From his days as SSG, he has remained a man with impeccable integrity. He has also given unparalleled support to the party from inception till date.
"He possesses impeccable integrity, very resourceful with proven track record of performance. We believe he should be part of d new team to move APC to new heights and meet d expectation of Party members.
"Time has now come for such a person to take over the leadership of the party in the zone and we are optimistic that he will lead the party to victory in the 2019 elections in the south east zone, " the statement noted.
Meanwhile, a factional chairman of APC in Enugu state, Mr. Okey Ogbodo has inaugurated the party's executives in the 17 local governments of the state.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony which took place at the party's secretariat in Enugu, Ogbodo also expressed optimism that the APC will clinch the governorship of the state by 2019.
He said the mission of his leadership of the state chapter of the party was to play politics without bitterness and to offer credible opposition to the PDP, in Enugu state so it can live up to it's responsibilities to the people.
He extended olive branch to the other factional chairman, Dr Ben Nwoye, dressing the need for the party to work in harmony in view of the task ahead.
'Today's meeting is to inform you that immediately we return from the national convention holding at Abuja on June 23, We shall plan how to wrestle power from PDP in Enugu state. We don't want members who are APC in Abuja but PDP in Enugu state. Either you are in APC or you are not. Your support and prayers are for the benefit of good governance in Enugu state," he stated.
