Nonpayment of Salary: Tragedy Strikes as Deputy Director Dies in Kogi

The non-payment of salaries of Kogi State workers by the state government, has been attributed to the death of a deputy director in the Ministry of Education who slumped on Tuesday and died on the spot.

The civil servant, Mr. David Haruna, was in the quality control department of the ministry.

 According to THISDAY Report, since assumptions of this present administration, many lives have been lost, including pensioners over nonpayment of salaries and pensions to the workers.

According to an eye witnessed account, David was said to have complained to his colleagues the hardships he was passing through following the nonpayment of salaries by the state government.  

According to a ministry sources, the deputy director died at about 12:00 noon on his way to sign in the mandatory ‘clock-in, clock-out’ for civil servants in the state,  a practice that was introduced by the present Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.   Those who had interactions with David at work earlier in the day said he was full of life in the morning. 

He was however said to have  complained that  in the last few weeks, it has been difficult meeting  his family obligations, adding that in the last three days he had to beg from neighbours to feed his family.

Source at the ministry disclosed that he was last paid in February 2018 with half salary that could not pay his backlogs of debt he incurred before the payment of the 50 percent salary. 

Until his death, the late David was said to be a hardworking person and diligent in his work, but died as a result of non-payment of salary, as he could not fulfilled his family financial obligations.  Meanwhile, the state Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Onuh Edoka, said the union has directed one of their members to investigate the cause of death before the leadership of the union can make their position known.
