Kogi Speaker Impeached

The Speaker of Kogi
State House of Assembly, Hon. Momohjimoh Lawal, has been impeached by his former supporters as Speaker of the assembly.

A new speaker, Hon. Imam Umar, representing Lokoja 1 constituency
, was also elected by 15 members of the assembly with Hon. Friday Sanni and Lawi Ahmed as Majority Leader and Deputy Majority Leader respectively.

T
his is the second attempt in one month, leading to the indefinite adjournment of the Lawal-led assembly.

The new Majority Leader, Sanni, said other elected leaders are Hon. John Abba as Chief Whip while the position of the Deputy Speaker was left vacant.

Addressing journalists at the
assembly complex, Sanni said the impeached speaker did not demonstrate capacity to lead the assembly.

According to him, the
assembly cannot be led as a sole enterprise which all rules are ignored and the assembly remained closed perpetually.

He said the
assembly had followed due process to remove the speaker, saying 15 members signed the impeachment notice, as only seven members were required to form quorum to remove the principal officers.

"With the
Court of Appeal ruling which sacked five of our members, reducing it to 20, only seven members are required to form quorum and we have more than that," he said.

San
ni said the assembly has for some time remained closed and non active following the alleged ineptitude of the leadership of the assembly, adding that the replacement was occasioned to usher in improved productivity, unity and togetherness.
