Protesters Take over Asaba as Delta Traditional Stool Palaver Rages

It was reported today that protesters, numbering hundred today marched through streets in Asaba, the Delta State capital, to express disapproval of the alleged plan by the state government to formally recognise Mr Agbaovwe Afugbeya as authentic monarch in Uwheru Kingdom in Ughelli North Local Government Area.

The protesters claimed that the state government has con lauded plans to present the said Agbaovwe Afugbeya with Staff of Office and officially gazette him as the Uwheru king.

I was learnt that the protest was a highpoint of the lingering kingship tussle in Uwheru Kingdom, with a section of the kingdom accusing the state government of bias.

The placard bearing demonstrators, chanting protest songs, marched from summit Junction to the Government House on Anwai Road, through the office of the Commissioner for Justice on SSS Road to the office of the Deputy Governor on DBS Road.

They expressed disenchantment with what they termed divide-and-rule tactics of the state government regarding the traditional stool for Uwheru Kingdom.

They warned of serious crisis in the area should the state government go ahead to present the staff of office to Agbaovwe Afugbeya as king and gazette him for the position while the matter was pending in court.

Drawn from the five ruling houses in the kingdom, they carried placards with various inscriptions including, "Allow rule of law to prevail" and "Don’t dabble into our affairs."

They called on Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, his Deputy, Mr Kingsley Otuaro, and the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Peter Murakpor, to suspend the purported plan to recognize Agbaovwe Afugbeya as King of Uwheru Kingdom pending the decision of the issue in the Court of Appeal sitting in Benin-City.
